“I work at a hospital and I’m not sure what my gift is in life — I’m not sure what I like doing. Need help!” ~ Vivian, Chicago, IL

Dear Vivian,

I can so appreciate your question! Just a few years ago I was in the same place myself – in a job I was good at but didn’t love and feeling empty inside, like I didn’t know where I was headed. I think I can help you with this by sharing a bit of my journey with you.

First, it’s important to recognize that even if we are good at doing something, that may not be what our true passion or “calling” is. I used to be an administrative assistant and I was very good at juggling calls and keeping calendars and spreadsheets, but I wouldn’t say I was passionate about it. When I took a writing class just for fun, I awakened a true passion inside of myself, and I had never even enjoyed writing before that class! What began as a hobby for me slowly turned into a true passion, and then into a best-selling book and basis for a strong income stream and stability enough to leave the job I wasn’t passionate about.

Second, I’d invite you to take a look at what you do like about your current hospital job. Do you like working in the healthcare field, being in a constantly-changing environment? Do you find fulfillment in helping and comforting others? Do you like the hours and working away from home? Do you enjoy the size of the team you work with? Do you like working with people one-on-one or in groups? These answers may help you find clues pointing you toward a line of work that would draw out your passion and your gifts.

Third, keep an open mind! I’ve had my intuition lead me to wander into coffee shops or toward interacting with total strangers without having any idea why I was guided to do so! One of those encounters led me back to writing after I had finished that class and left writing behind, and one led to my work branching into the corporate arena. There is a greater plan, and the best way to find it is to listen to the intuitive nudges, even (and especially!) if we have no idea where they are possibly leading us.

I hope this is helpful to you, and I wish you the absolute best on your journey. I have no doubt there is an amazing path already laid out for you!
