Momentum. If you’re like me, the word itself gives you a feeling of movement, of freedom, of possibility. And if you find momentum to be foundational to your existence, you may also be an Entrepreneurial Personality Type (EPT).

EPTs are momentum-based beings, meaning they have a mental, physical and chemical response to momentum, or the sensation of moving forward. Conversely, EPTs also have negative responses to constraint, or anything hindering their ability to move forward. Constraints of any kind adversely affect their emotional states and their understanding of where they fit in the world.

When I talk to entrepreneurs about this concept, most of them instantly agree and realize it clarifies their behaviors and reactions to the world around them. However, some remain confused by the terminology. This is understandable because for most of our lives we have thought of momentum purely in relation to what we learned in high school physics.

But just look back over your life … you know exactly when you’ve had momentum. Those times were when success literally rained down on you, when anything was possible, when accessing your highest potential was effortless. Some call this flow, the zone or zen. I call this living in momentum because it’s something we are, something within us. It’s a natural state of being.

What if I said you could be in that amazing place anytime you choose? What if I said you could access your momentum today, tomorrow and any day?

It’s true. It’s not a gimmick, and it’s proven by what you’ve already done in your past. The secret is in knowing what was behind your times of momentum in the first place, and it’s actually quite simple.

Look again at that time of momentum in your life, and ask yourself these questions:

  1. What outcome were you driving toward?
  2. How did you know you achieved or moved toward that outcome?
  3. Who helped you get there (and who did you help along the way)?

The answers to these questions illustrate your momentum equation, which looks like this:

An Outcome + A Scoreboard + A Mutual Contribution = Momentum

Whether you knew it or not, this simple equation was and is behind your times of greatest momentum, and understanding it will unlock your ability to create momentum going forward.

So if you ever feel stuck or challenged (not “in momentum”), seek to identify and clarify the three elements of your momentum equation. Finding clarity in these elements will propel you toward greater momentum and achievement in your life and in your business.
