A Huge Bear Paw Print!

Last week I posted a blog from Montana, about a noise that we heard on two different nights. Many of you wrote to me to ask if we ever figured out what caused it.

The short answer is that we never did determine the cause of the “clink, clink, clink” noise. The long answer is that we were right to be cautious in roaming around the mountains in the dark of night.

Just after I posted that blog it rained. The next day I went for a walk on the lane leading up to the main ranch home. I was literally stopped in my tracks by the tracks in front of me. The land was covered with huge footprints- bears!

Some of them were twice the size of my foot!

In the ten years I owned the ranch I only saw a bear on the property one time- on the day we decided to purchase the ranch. My friend Andrew and I were sitting in a meadow and had asked the Universe for a sign to show us this was the right place to purchase.

Within minutes a mule deer wandered out and began grazing at Andrew’s feet. Andrew, who was visiting from Los Angeles, was memorized by the deer.

He almost missed the bear cub that bolted between the two of us. We were barely in the car when mama bear came ambling out of the forest in search of her cub, just a few feet from where we were standing just seconds ago.

Bears have always been a very special part of my life. From the name of the ranch- Dreaming Bear Ranch, to the two years I spent as a Board Member for the Vital Ground Foundation which protects grizzly habitat through land conservation easements, the bear has been my totem and my guide.

I guess it’s only natural that we’d found these prints the day we found our new piece of land in Montana- a 16 acre parcel with Bear Creek running through it. Seems the bears are talking to me again!

I thought you’d enjoy seeing the photos of the prints. I hope I was right.

Today, may the grounded, strong, wild Montana bear energy be with you no matter where you roam.
