Recently I was driving and came across this sign, informing me that there was a “Rough Break Ahead”. I burst out laughing and thought, “Wouldn’t it be nice if life gave us signs like this?” And the more I thought about it, I realized- it does!

For most of us, we move along our path fairly obliviously, with a few bumps in the road and don’t realize we’ve hit a rough break until we’re there. Then, we look back and wonder what just happened.

However, I believe our personal signs are there as well, IF we’re paying attention.

As we’re driving, this Rough Break Ahead sign prepares us so that we can take evasive action by slowing down or taking another route, just as our personal signs encourage us to do the same.

When we’re working hard on a project and nothing is lining up as it should, when we’re trying to make a relationship work and it isn’t, when we’re miserable in a job that is unfulfilling, when we’re not happy with life… these are our personal signs of a possible (or probable) rough break ahead.

And, just as we do when we see a physical Rough Break Ahead sign, our personal signs are encouraging us to slow down and access the situation. When you think about it, if you see this sign when you’re driving, most likely you won’t turn around and go another way, but rather, you’ll slow down, check things out, pay attention, and pass through the rough spot, knowing that this too shall pass.

When we learn to pay attention to our own signs to know what’s coming, we’re more likely to enjoy a smooth, happy ride and not end up in a ditch at the side of the road. And, it all starts with simply paying attention to the signs in our life.
