Yesterday I shared with you that I’m planning to write a blog each day for the next 30 days. That brought up all kinds of stuff for me.

What if I don’t have enough material? What if I don’t have the time? What if they’re not perfect? I even received a blog comment yesterday from a man named Scott, who also had the same concern for his blog- “What if they’re not perfect?”.

PelicanCan you imagine things in Nature asking that? Look at some of the most bizarre creatures and think, what if a pelican looked at an eagle and said, “I’m not going to catch fish today because I don’t look perfect. I don’t know how to soar. All I do is make unsightly splashes into the water just trying to eat”. Even writing this- it sounds ludicrous, yet that’s what WE do every day!

Interestingly enough, I think my blog entries might be better if they’re not perfect and here’s why. If we only share our perfection with each other, that leads others to believe that we’re perfect and they’re not, when in fact, none of us are. That alone may stop others from following their own dream- as they wait to get it perfect.

P1040488We all have huge imperfections, which is part of our beauty in being human. We’re all going to have days where we’re the pelican and not the eagle- and that’s more than okay, that’s perfect.

So rather than strive for perfection, I’m going for authenticity. I believe it’s better to share from my heart and be real, even if it’s something that perhaps I shouldn’t have shared, and even if I look like a pelican.  Vulnerability creates connection and that’s far more important to me than perfection any day.

Rather than shoot for P1040491perfection, just do your best and forget the rest. The most important thing is as Nike says- “Just Do It!”.

Waiting to sing your song, dance your dance or dream your dream until you get it perfect is just silly. Life will pass you by while you’re waiting for something unattainable to happen.

Instead, just go take the first step. Be like the pelican and just dive into the water. Splash away! Celebrate that it won’t be perfect! For in the imperfection lies opportunity!

When you have the audacity to just show up and take the first step, the Universe lines up behind you saying, “Yeah, you go for it, and I’m right here to help you”. P1040497_2_2

So, what are you waiting for? What can you do today- right now in this very moment,  that won’t be perfect but will be a step in the right direction? Go do it.

Come on, dive into the world of imperfection with me. I’m sure we’ll create some fun stories along the way, but isn’t that what life is all about anyway? (At least we won’t look quite as silly as this pelican, but who cares anyway!)

Thanks for continuing to share your thoughts, successes and stories with me as we grow and celebrate our imperfections together. I’m so grateful for you in my life.

p.s. I took these photos last week in the British Virgin Islands. As I watched these creatures dive, I wondered, how do pelicans dive like they do and not get headaches? More perfection in what appears to be imperfection…. 🙂

  1. Thank you for this article! Really inspiring! I always hesitate while going to do something. Now I will memorise pelicans and JUST DO

  2. Elena, I love it! Never thought I’d be saying “Be a pelican”, but heh, it looks like it works! 🙂

Keep me posted on your progress please. Hugs to you and thanks again for sharing your comment.

  3. Pamela, I’m assuming you mean the pelican…. and I agree. He’s actually eating a fish and I caught him mid-bite. 🙂

  4. You have a great gift as a photographer, and the pictures add so much to the picture of your words. Life is full of symbols, and adding pictures to your blogs, reminds us that life all around, speaking to us, if we are just daring enough to listen, and step out,in our imperfection, even if we have not idea where it is leading to,,,again thank you for sharing your talents with all of us…
