“Sometimes I feel like I’m carrying the pain of the world in my heart. How can people be so mean to one another and what can I do to lighten my load?” ~ Courtney

Dear Courtney,

For those gifted with high empathy levels, the world can seem like a barrage of emotions, constantly crashing down like meteors onto the moon. But unlike the moon, we have a way of coping with the emotional-energy missiles we encounter.

In our default state, humans are essentially emotional mirrors; we take on, and reflect back, whatever is sent our way. But we are not inanimate — we thankfully have a choice of what to reflect and what to deflect.

It does take practice, but when cruelty or sorrow comes your way, send out love, and let it slip past you.

This does not mean that we don’t feel for others – we must continue to empathize. But just as a mother stays strong and apparently healthy when her children are ill, we must try to stay immune to the pains that others send out so that we can freely send love and comfort.

Try to send out joy and/or love for at least a few minutes every day. It will help heal and uplift others, and it should reflect back to you. Remember: in life, whatever you send out will come back, magnified.

  1. How perfect to come across this! This week has seemed especially demanding for me, yet I must stay in the front to lead positively forward. Choosing to emanate waves of love, instead of retreating, will help all in my range of influence. Thank you, Myrlia!
