One of the ways to lead a joyous, fulfilling life is by learning to appreciate the small things in life we come across daily. We are surrounded by beauty and inspiration all the time – we just need to learn how to see it. Whether you’re an artist looking for ideas and inspiration or simply trying to enjoy life a little more, start finding inspiration in the everyday to recognize the beauty and wonder of the world.

Continue learning. Learning should not stop once you graduate from school; in fact, you should challenge yourself to learn something new every day. Learning allows you to continue to grow as a person, to meet new people, and discover new passions.

“Do one thing every day that scares you.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

Take a walk. Walking allows you to let go of your daily thoughts and tasks and just be. Breathe the fresh air, soak in the scenery, and admire the beauty that nature has to offer. As Hal Borland states, “All walking is discovery. On foot we take the time to see things whole.”

Listen to music. Music is good for the soul. It nourishes our body. Take some time each day to listen to some of your favorite songs, or even better, discover new music. It may inspire you in a way you never thought possible. “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent,” stated Victor Hugo.

Volunteer. Inspiration can be found when we step outside our own box and break up the monotony of the day. Giving your time to help someone in need is sure to bring about all sorts of inspiration and gratitude.

Read plenty of books. Think about who or what inspires you. What do you admire in people? What person has changed their life for the better or done something extraordinary? Read their bios. Learn from others. Plenty of inspiration can be found in those we admire.

People-watch. While commuting home (if you take public transportation), look around you. What are others reading or doing? Listen to the chitter-chatter amongst the other commuters. If you don’t use public transportation, sit quietly at a coffee shop and listen to those around you. Observing others can help you think about your own life and ways to change it.

Watch an inspirational movie. Watch a movie that really moves you and gets the blood pumping through your veins. One that inspires you, makes you laugh, makes you cry, and most importantly, makes you think. I love Slumdog Millionaire, Good Will Hunting, Rudy, The Pursuit of Happyness, and Pay It Forward.

Spend time with children. Children are usually very happy and carefree. They remind us what it’s like to appreciate the simple things in life. They inspire us to laugh, love, and trust in people. Children are a light in the world, and learning to see things through the eyes of a child can put things into perspective. Walt Disney, for example, was inspired by his children, and look at the magical world he has created all because of his kids.

“Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence of the human spirit. We are all the same in this notion: The potential for greatness lives within each of us.” – Wilma Rudolph
