“Don’t touch that money, it is dirty!”

A caring parent often shouts

And then kids wonder when they’re 30

What their aversion’s all about.

“The money doesn’t grow on trees!”

We’ve heard that once or twice before

It’s there along with “Birds and Bees”

Engrained into our very core.

We’re raised on phrases that inspire

More fear than honor and respect

Some are confusing, some are dire

But all produce the same affect.

How ‘bout the following sensation –

“Money’s the root of all the sin”

This charming, stirring revelation

Can really take one for a spin.

It’s worth “two cents” but “time is money”

However, it “won’t buy you love”

So “make a killing” with it honey

Because it’s “manna from above”…

Kids are confused with our expressions

And then they look at the TV

To find a star in latest fashions

Promoting newest SUV.

We want for them to be successful

Be “worth their weight in gold” someday

But in the meantime, it’s just stressful

And we are getting in the way.

So put your idioms to pasture

Think twice before you let one slip

Kids pay attention to your lectures

Make sure this one’s for them to keep.

Money is money, do not praise it,

Nor put it down in their young eyes

Help them respect it but not chase it

For having it won’t make them wise

It is important but not vital

And you should strive to teach them that

That knowledge will make them entitled

And they won’t have to “pass the hat”.

  1. Very interesting spin. And so true. So much stigma around money. Self limiting benefits and confusing messages. Money is just money. It doesn’t mean anything until we assign meaning to it. Thanks for sharing.
