We have to know where we are going if we want to get there. What does this mean? We have to set goals.

Imagine you are given a box of LEGOs and asked to build a castle. There is only one problem. There is no blueprint or picture of how the castle is supposed to look. So where do you start? What pieces should be placed together? Of course, you can start building; however, without a blueprint or picture, you can never be sure if you are heading in the right direction.

Life works in this same way. We have to know what we want before we can begin heading in the right direction. This is why it is imperative to set goals. We must decide what we want out of life and write down those desires.

It is important to write down our goals for three reasons: First, it forces us to be specific about what we really want. Second, it allows us to make our goals tangible things that we can possess. Finally, it allows us to visualize our desires and see our progress. This is extremely vital. After all, a goal that isn’t written down is just a wish.

Once we know where we want to go, we have to make a conscious effort to keep a positive mentality. The age-old question asks, “Is the glass half full or half empty?” Some people may say that it is neither; the glass is twice as large as it needs to be.

Individuals who answer the question this way realize that life is all about perspective. We will be faced with roadblocks on our journey to success, but we have to keep a positive outlook. If we can’t change the situation, we can change the way we look at it.

As we are working towards our goals, we can’t get caught up in the “how.” We often know what we want to do, but we question how we are going to get there. “How am I going to get the money?” “How am I going to convince someone to believe in me?” “How am I going to achieve all of my goals?” We ask so many questions that we begin to fear moving forward with our dreams and goals.

If you feel that you are meant to do something, don’t allow fear to keep you from doing it. Don’t get caught up in the “how.” As Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “You don’t have to see the whole staircase; just take the first step.” If you are supposed to accomplish something, the universe will make sure that it comes to pass. Simply write down what you want, and start taking the necessary steps to achieve it.
