You may not believe it, but you hold your own transformation in your own hands. You can turn darkness into light, turn any issue you have into an asset, convert suffering into wisdom and along the way shine the light for others. You are the ultimate alchemist.

Mindfulness and creativity are the two keys to releasing yourself from your own pain and transforming it into something valuable. When you stand back and get some distance from ‘the story of your life’ and you can then look at it differently and learn from it. Now this is when then magic starts to happen.

Let’s take depression as an example where you have good days and really down days where there’s no light at the end of the tunnel and not a scrap of hope to even mildly lift you up. Take note of how you’re feeling, so that when you have a slightly better day you can write about the experience. Just start off with keeping a journal and then you might choose to start a blog where you share your experiences with others and help them understand they’re not alone.

Without knowing it, you’re turning your victim status into something more empowering. Eventually you may collate your blog posts into a book and take it to a publisher and if it gets rejected 10 times, that’s OK, you’re taking charge of your life and not getting caught up being a victim.

Another idea is to get creative and ‘draw’ your feelings. Forget convention and social norms get wild and expressive with crayons, paint and whatever else and draw like no-one is ever going to see it. It just feels good to express yourself and let things flow through and out. Then try and put them in frames and see what they look like. Sell them on Ebay or start your website and give it a funky name.

If you’re an insomniac and end up sleeping all day, don’t put up with people calling you lazy and then believing them. Just get a job or hobby that involves working at night or start writing, painting, or making jewelry or whatever is an expression of you.

Whatever issue you have, disability or problem you encounter, you can guarantee that someone else is going through the same thing so why not share your experiences in some way so that other’s can benefit from your wisdom and experience. Even turn your ‘issue’ into an income! Write about it and sell books, start a Facebook page and inspire others, the ideas are limitless.

When you turn your ‘problem’ into an asset, that’s called alchemy and you did it all by yourself. You are amazing!
