Love can single-handedly mend a broken day, establish an exciting new relationship, or reinforce a happy, internal bond with ourselves. Love is an omnipotent tool that has the uncanny ability to improve any sticky situation we find ourselves in.
Love is a power tool we should all have in our happiness toolboxes. But just like that power drill or band saw, it also comes with some safety protocol. When you use your love power tool, you take on the responsibility of treating the world with kindness, compassion and respect. Use your love power tool responsibly, forging, fixing and strengthening relationships that make the world a happier place.
To help you get started now, here are 5 practical parenting power tools that I practice and share with clients, at workshops and radio show listeners around the globe:
- “No” is also a power tool. Do not be afraid to use it.
- Kids have a way of hijacking our reasoning skills. Do not negotiate with emotional terrorists.
- Dial in and listen.
- In order to create a happy home we must FIRST commit to being happy parents even if life is not always happy.
- Humor is like a spoonful of sugar that helps the medicine (tough love and discipline) go down.
As a single mom to teenagers in the thick of adolescence, I have learned that love is like a magic elixir. It is the gateway through which my parenting flows. And yet as lovely as love is, it does not always transmit like a cozy warm blanket. Raising kids is a tough job that does not come with an instruction manual. More often than not, parenting is a thankless task until one day (well, maybe a few years into the way distant future), we receive a golden nugget of gratitude for our mental, physical and moral fortitude.
