“I am getting confused…. I thought that we agreed to have a human experience in order to learn certain lessons like compassion, self reliance, gratitude, etc… and if we have not learned these lessons in previous lives, we will need to keep trying to master them in future lives… but now I am being told that past karma has nothing to do with our lessons in our present lives? I guess another way of asking the question is – many people tell me that if you were a serial killer in this life, then you may be a Holocaust victim in another of your lives?????” ~ Lynn, Tysons Corner, VA
Hi Lynn,
Thank you for posing this very interesting question about karma, and lessons and soul growth. One of the things to keep in mind, is that regardless of what other people tell you, the very best way to receive guidance and information to questions about life’s meaning and why we are here, is to have direct connection for yourself—meditation, prayer, contemplation and so forth. In this way, you’ll experience a new kind of understanding that surpasses what you read in books or what others tell you.
In my view, what I’ve received in my own direct connection, is that we’re Divine beings in human bodies, and we’re here for soul growth. With each human lifetime, we get a chance to have soul growth in the way that is particular to the human condition: to have our hearts progressively opened into enlightenment. There are four passages: pain, compassion, connection and love… and if we’re lucky, we’ll make our way through this progression of heart’s opening in this lifetime.
Karma, in the way I look at it, is simply soul lessons learned over time… and we keep getting as many chances to learn as we need. Each of us is on our own timetable; some people come into this lifetime quite far along, others are just beginning, but it’s not important where we are. What’s important is the progression—that we keep having the willingness to learn and grow as conscious beings.
Much love,
SARA
