Honoring Those Who Have Fallen

Today we celebrate Memorial Day in the United States. When we hear "Memorial Day", most Americans think of it as the beginning of the summer, a day filled with picnics, parties, warm weather and fun times. Yet when we look back to the origins on this holiday, the way we celebrate it is quite different from the original intent. According to History.com, Memorial Day, which falls on the last Monday of May, commemorates the men and women who died while serving in the American military. First observed in 1868 as Decoration Day, it was designated for the purpose of strewing…

Should I Take the First Step in a Relationship?

"Two weeks ago my crush sent me a friendship request on Facebook and he told me that he likes me. I was so happy but since then we haven't talked. I texted him once after that but the last message is always mine -- I feel like he's not interested in me anymore. The sad part is that I will never see him again after this week , he's going to another country! And I don't know if I should tell him that I like him or not -- what if he ignores me and I'll look so stupid? What should I do, please?" ~…

The Top 10 Things I’ve Learned From Richard Branson

Today's Brilliance is a bit different from other days. I had the honor of spending a few hours with Sir Richard Branson at his home on Necker Island, in the British Virgin Islands. As I walked into his home, I found him lying in a hammock in an alcove of the great room, open to the warm tropical breezes, overlooking the multi-colored turquoise Caribbean Sea. Bliss. Barefoot and dressed in swim shorts and a tee shirt, he looked more like a Jimmy Buffett fan rather than the founder of the Virgin Group, best known as the only person in the…

Health and Wealth Because of a Little Blue Dress

About a month ago, I was in New York City and stopped into Loehmann’s, an off-price store known for great deals on high-end merchandise. I stumbled upon the perfect little blue cocktail dress at the right price and bought it, even though I had no idea where I would wear it. This dress was a designer dress and the original price was over $2000, but it was discounted to only $180.  The dress is gorgeous and the perfect color for me. The only thing “wrong” with it, is that it’s the wrong size (or I am), but I bought it…

How Can I Solve My Financial Problems?

"I'm doing financially horrible. I needed to get some food and household items... I was flat broke and I had no other choice than to take my 7 year old boys' Xbox back. I feel so bad, I'm losing sleep. Did I do the right thing?" ~ Tiffany, Effingham, IL Dear Tiffany, We all run into problems from time to time, and often they are of a financial nature. I believe that most of the time, the problem comes from our thoughts. The most difficult thing to do when we don't know how we're going to feed our family is…

Are Those Heavy Burdens Actually A Gift?

Nature always teaches us lessons, if we just pay attention. Today, my husband and I went for a snowshoe hike by our home in Glacier National Park, with Koda (our 6 year old Samoyed). The snow was deep and beautiful. The temperature was just above freezing and unfortunately, instead of the forecast for several inches of new snow gently falling, it was lightly raining. The heavy snowpack from the last week combined with the wet, falling rain, increased the burden being placed on the trees, weighing them down with large piles of heavy, wet snow. Some of them were bent…

How Can I Forgive Betrayal?

"Hi, how can I forgive an infidelity and betrayal by my partner of 30 years, who has since left me? It has been a year since she left and I still have strong emotions; shock, sorrow, anger, grief, confusion that will not go away. I think about her every day and at night. My partner is 72 years old, survived cancer 2x while we've been together and has been professing her love to me all these years; telling me she looked forward to our future together. (I am 10 years younger.) I need to forgive, for myself more than for…

Creating the Masterpiece of What Might Be

For the last few months I haven’t blogged much, as I’ve been physically working at our new home in Glacier National Park. We’ve been working to complete the construction of our dream - a gorgeous home in the mountains. I take great pride in what we’re creating here... sometime a bit too much. I’m writing today to share a learning experience I had this week, from behavior that I’m not proud of. Our current project is the creation of original concrete/painted/epoxy countertops for our kitchen. I learned a lesson this week from a super sweet 11 year-old girl, named Lexi.…

How Can I Have More Energy?

"I am a procrastinator, sleepy, always tired, and I am 20. How can I end this permanently?" ~ Tina, Baltimore Dear Tina, I think we can all identify with being sleepy and tired, and with procrastination. Kudos to you in advance for reaching out for help. Being sleepy and tired can be symptoms of an underlying problem, so have your health checked with a professional. That being said, I've found the following things to be of great help to creating unlimited energy. Get 7-8 hours of restful sleep each night. Insomniacs, use lavender oil! Start and end the day with gratitude,…

Making Lemonade in the Islands

For the last 2 weeks I’ve been sailing the crystal clear waters of the British Virgin Islands. For the first 9 days we had nothing but bright sunshine, clear skies and blue water. Then the rains came, and came and came. It feels like it’s been raining forever- all three days of it. Yesterday, our crew was disappointed at not being able to go to the beach because of the downpour. We were disheartened with all the things we couldn’t do because of the rain. Reluctantly, we set our sails for a better place to ride out the storm. As…

Rough Break Ahead

By Gail Lynne Goodwin. Recently I was driving and came across this sign, informing me that there was a "Rough Break Ahead". I burst out laughing and thought, "Wouldn't it be nice if life gave us signs like this?" And the more I thought about it, I realized- it does! For most of us, we move along our path fairly obliviously, with a few bumps in the road and don't realize we've hit a rough break until we're there. Then, we look back and wonder what just happened. However, I believe our personal signs are there as well, IF we’re…

Enjoy Your Magical Moments to the Fullest

By Gail Lynne Goodwin. I believe that life is comprised of a string of magical moments, memories that are so strong, so inspiring that we tuck them away into the recesses of our brain, and play them back when we want to relive them again. Right now, I'm creating more of these moments. We’ve chartered a boat from Northwest Expeditions and we’re cruising the waters off the coast of British Columbia, north of the San Juan (US) and Gulf Islands (Canada), in an area called Desolation Sound. To say the area is stunning would be an understatement. Not only are…

New Beginnings

By Gail Lynne Goodwin. For me, lessons are learned more quickly and remain with me longer, when they are tangible. Recently we purchased a property with a beautiful old historic home. But everything isn't always what it looks like on the outside. Over the last month, as we dug deeper into the condition of the house, we sadly realized that it would actually cost us much more to renovate the existing structure just to make it livable, than it would to demolish and rebuild a new one. After much discussion and a great amount of contemplation, we made the difficult decision to…

Discover the Hidden Riches of Ritual

Our friend and Luminary, Chris Attwood, along with his business partner Janet Attwood, has created an opportunity for us to discover the ancient secrets of ritual- AND how shows us how it can change our lives. What’s Your Tiger?

By Gail Lynne Goodwin. If you've ever been chased by a saber toothed tiger, running madly for your life, you've probably experienced fear. If you've ever been summoned to your boss' office to be reprimanded, you probably think you've experienced fear then too. However, I think that life-threatening situations, like being chased by a tiger who wants to eat you, are legitimate things to fear. Situations that are not life-threatening can sometimes seem scary, but I’d like to invite you to see them as nothing more than something that causes discomfort. For anyone who’s ever gone bungee jumping, paragliding or…

Surprise Inspiration

By Gail Lynne Goodwin. Ever since I was a little girl, I've loved surprises. Many times I start my day by asking the Universe to surprise and delight me that day... and to make it so outrageous, that I'll know that my request was answered. It always works for me but rarely in the way that I think it will. Knowing that I was going to hike through the snow in Glacier National Park today, I put in my request this morning, for something that would make me smile. I had expectations of a beautiful rainbow amidst the snow, of…

Run to “YES”!

By Gail Lynne Goodwin. One of the things that I love most about Sir Richard Branson is that he's know for saying YES to most things. In fact, his board affectionately calls him Dr. Yes. But sometimes saying “Yes” isn’t easy, as it makes us step outside our comfort zone. About a week ago I received an invitation from my daughter to run a half-marathon late this year. I am not, nor have I ever been a runner. I doubt that I could run a mile right now if I tried to. I'll be 55 years old this October. I…

Happy Valentine’s Day

By Gail Lynne Goodwin. There's something about people in grocery stores that often inspire me. Today as I was waiting in the check out line, there was an older couple in front of me, who the cashier greeted as Ginny and Roy. As they neared their turn in line, I noticed that Ginny had a single Valentine's Day card, while Roy was proudly holding a single red rose. Ginny, well into her 80s handed the cashier the greeting card, then started counting out coins to pay for it. Roy waited and watched, smiling. Then, he handed the rose to the…
