A friend of mine wrote on his wall one day on Facebook, right after the New Year: “What Do You Regret ?”
My response was: Everything and Nothing…
So let me explain my answer. Everything, because if I knew then what I know now, I would have done things differently. And… Nothing, because everything I have been through has made me into who I am today.
Now… here is where clients will tell me, Well… I don’t like who I am now…
My response to my clients when they tell me this is the following. First of all, we all need to learn to forgive ourselves and others. If we are still beating ourselves up mentally, physically and spiritually and we are doing the same to others, nothing can change. As per one of the definitions of insanity – “Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”
If we don’t like who we have become first we must accept and let go of the past, and accept and let go of the judgment of where we are now. Then and only then can we move forward into a space of, I am fully committed to doing everything and anything I need to to move forward and towards what I want to achieve in my life now.
Never Ever Give Up your dreams. If you don’t know how, ask… If you are stuck, ask… We must be willing to reach out to others and get the assistance we need in life to move forward. It could be a friend, co-worker, family member, church, mentor, just don’t do the woe is me thing, get out there and ask.
You would be surprised how many people there are that care about you – even total strangers that would be willing to help you, direct you towards the proper resources, etc… Key: nobody wants to work with a person who is negative and in victim energy mode. They are going to want to see a person who really wants to change their life and is willing to do the work to get there.
Stand up for yourself. Love yourself enough to be the best YOU ever, no matter what you are going through. I say this awaiting news for my 28th surgery. Yes You Can… If I can still be positive, so can you. Let’s do it….
Enjoy the journey; life is too short to get sucked into negativity and despair.

So important to let the past go. There’s nothing you can to change it, anyway, so moving on with a positive attitude is both motivational and practical
Thanks for sharing Lynn and Yes so absolutely true we cannot change what has already happened all we can do is change where we are going now
Thanks Lynn for joining in on the conversation and yes we can’t change it, so let’s move on
I absolutely agree. How can you ever move forward if you keep dwelling on the past? Great post.
Thanks for sharing Miriam, and completely agree dwelling on past doesn’t sure anyone.
That’s a great blog post Carly, really good advice, easy to read and comprehend and makes sense. A good recipe with all the ingredients in one place!!
Thanks Malcolm, I hope that it inspires many… Have a beautiful weekend
I agree and disagree – everything does make us who we are today – but I would like to change some things – because who’s to say I wouldn’t want to be a bit different than the person I am today? Perhaps I would be living somewhere else? I love the job I have. I love my son. I have seen movies like the butterfly effect – even the smallest change can have huge impacts on the future, but I sometimes imagine what would my life have been like if I would have made a different choice.
Oh I agree Knikkolette that is why I said, “Everything, because if I knew then what I know now, I would have done things differently. And… Nothing, because everything I have been through has made me into who I am today” I think we all wonder the key is not to get stuck in the wondering, if we it stops us from moving forward.
Great post and I completely agree.
Thanks Carmen… so glad you enjoyed the article
Negativity never works! The sooner we realize it, the happier we’ll be!
Very true indeed Tereza, negativity is also a energy drainer, and who wants to be drained. Have a great sunday and Thanks for sharing.
Very nice Carly, I think if you commit to learn and grow each day, there’s little time to look back with regret. Sitting idle with little to look forward to turns our thoughts in the wrong direction. With that said, I do regret not logging in for those Kid Rock tickets before they sold out. 😉 (humor is important too) lol
Yes Brian HUMOR is critical in life… We must be able to laugh at ourselves and situations. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.
